LACONA’S STORY

The village was founded in 1803 and Lacona was incorporated as a village in 1880.  Lacona initially grew as a result of the Watertown and Rome railroad which was an important part of early commerce for the area and Northern New York.

The railroad is a proud part of our heritage and the former Lacona Depot has been restored and has become both the Village of Lacona and Village of Sandy Creek Offices. A variety of historic documents, photos, postcards, and railroad memorabilia are housed there.

The population of Lacona was 657 at the 2020 census, our population has rebounded after a couple of decades of declines. Demand for existing housing remains strong.

Our Lacona Volunteer Fire Department  founded in 1880 celebrated 145 years of service in 2025. The Department offers Fire, Rescue, and EMT services.

Lacona is looking toward the future: we celebrate our humble beginnings as a business center centered around Dairy farming, water powered mills and the lumber and manufacturing industry along with retail sales that provided for the local residents. While the Dairies, mills and the lumber industries have moved on.  We retain our close family-oriented community, in fact many families have called Lacona home for generations. We offer a business-friendly environment. Surrounded by the ever changing views of forests, farm fields, Lacona is an idyllic location to live and work, we are a short drive to the Cities of Oswego, Watertown, and Syracuse via Interstate 81 and State Route 3 & 11.

Join us as we continue our tradition of building a bright future together.
